Hello there!
Let's start off with introductions.
My name is Katie. I am a 30 year old living in Brisbane, Australia. I received an official diagnosis of Lipoedema at the end of 2020. (What a way to round out one of the toughest years I have faced yet, Thanks Covid-19!)
Before I tell you about my diagnosis I want to share a bit of my life with you... tighten your seatbelts, I will try to make this a quick trip down memory lane!
I grew up in a small rural town called Wudinna in South Australia. When I say small, I do mean small. No fast food restaurants, no public transport, no cinemas, no arcades, not a whole lot of anything. (I have a point here I promise) One of the benefits of living in a town like this was that everyone shared a love of sport. I started playing netball at the age of 5. Winter months were for netball, summer months were more intense with multiple different sports, basketball, cricket, and athletics. To say I was fortunate to have a mother who allowed myself and my siblings play as much sport as we did is a bit of an understatement. As kids we were on the go constantly. If we wanted to go to a friends house in town, we walked. (and lets be honest being such a small town walking one side to the other really isn't that impressive).
If we wanted junk food it got as exciting as fish and chips from the local roadhouse or a pub feed. The point I am trying to make here is that as a kid I didn't have access to a lot of junk food and led an active lifestyle.
Fast forward to the age of ten and here comes puberty…… to be continued. (Don't you just hate those three little words!)
Hopefully that ride wasn't too bumpy and your seatbelts held up!
Stay tuned for the next chapter of my life, let's embrace lipoedema together.
Much love, Katie
